Could Flouride be threatening your health?

Your alarm tells you its time to depart from your cozy bed and you’ve run out of snooze options.

You drink the glass of water that’s been waiting patiently on your nightstand as you slept, to replenish the water you lost as you slept.

You thank the Universal Creator for another day, another opportunity.

Sometime between swinging your legs over the side of the bed and walking out the front door you brush you teeth.

But wait…have you ever noticed the the warning on your toothpaste packaging?

Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.

Wait, did they say poison? Yup! This means practicing oral hygiene could potentially be harmful to your health. Even more alarming is that children under the age of 6, including children in the womb, are at the greatest risk.

According to the The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and 1997 FDA mandated labeling, fluoridated toothpaste does not love you!

Fluoride’s effect:

  • Cosmetic- causing white or brown spots, known as dental fluorosis, to develop on a child’s permanent teeth.
  • Increased incidence of hyperactivity, ADD/ADHD, and memory problems.
  • More serious conditions-  cancer, skeletal fluorosis, depressed immunity, enzyme inactivity, disruption of collagen synthesis, genetic damage, and suppressed thyroid function and sex hormone production.

While the first two effects aren’t cool, let’s dissect the third, more serious category of Flouride induced health challenges.

First let’s answer the question, “What is Flouride”?

Flouride is one of the 115 confirmed elements. Since elements in the same vertical column or family, have the same number of react in a similar manner, in chemical relationships.   These “family” members can more easily displace each other, in the various chemical reactions and processes in our body.  Notice that Flouride and Iodine are in the same family.  pt

While there are many uses for Iodine in the body, two of the most critical involve the thyroids balancing of hormones and the complex processes involved in fetal development. Flouride threatens the necessary activity of Iodine, and so compromises health.  For adults this may be corrected, but for a developing fetus, the damage may be permanent.

At this time you maybe wondering, “if Flouride is so bad, how did it get into my toothpaste and water?”

First understand, that the naturally occurring Flouride, that is bound to calcium, forming a compound called Calcium Flouride, is not particularly harmful.  It accounts for 0.065% of the earth’s crust and is brought to the surface, naturally, by volcanoes.

On the other hand, synthetic, Flouride, in the form of a Sodium Flouride compound (AKA sodium silica fluoride or hydrofluoric acid), is toxic. A poisonous by-product of the fertilizer, nuclear & aluminum industries, it is also the active ingredient in rat poison. Despite this knowledge, our exposure, to the toxic form, skyrocketed in 1945.

Be warned, the following reads kinda like the Erin Brockovich movie.

In the 1940’s, the industry practice was to simply dump by-product waste into the rivers and lakes, because proper disposal of the fluoride was quite expensive.  However, when lawsuits from the effected farmers and landowners, near the dumpsites, started to roll in, the companies had to come up with a new solution. Francis Frary, chief scientist for the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), the largest producer of fluoride waste, hired Gerald Cox at the Mellon Institute, to conduct research regarding the benefits of adding fluoride to the water supply. It should be noted that this institute was frequently hired by big business to produce research that supported their industries, and for several decades they produced research showing that asbestos and smoking were safe and did not cause cancer.  Arsenio moment…..Hmmmmmm.

ALCOA, didn’t do all of this alone. They collaborated with Aluminum Company of Canada, American Petroleum Institute, Dupont, Kaiser Aluminum, Reynolds Steel, US Steel and National Institute of Dental Research.

The science research was used to assure the public that fluoride was not toxic and would be beneficial to add to our drinking water for healthy teeth. It was then spun by PR master, Edward Bernays, aka “The Father of Spin” into a campaign in which the toxic chemical was “recommended by your doctor and dentist for healthy teeth”. If you have ever seen the show “Mad Men”, then you have an idea of the spin-doctor process.

While it was illegal to dump fluoride into our lakes and rivers, it became a recommended additive of our toothpaste and drinking water supplies.

Any research that contradicted the industrial claims, about the safety of fluoride, was buried or minimized as a “conspiracy theory”. Just Google any of the following scientists, reporters or groups to learn about their findings: Dr. George Walbott, Dr. William Marcus, Dr. Phyllis Mullenix Christopher Bryson and Thankfully, the world is waking up. Many states are trying to end water fluoridation and dentists are even speaking out about the dangers of using it in their practices. Here is a list of countries that have already banned fluorine in the water

Some toothpaste companies, like Colgate and Crest (based on FB survey, 25% of you use either the former or latter) have gotten “smart” and changed their formulation from sodium fluoride to sodium monofluorophosphate. Look closely and you will see the same ingredients hidden in the second molecule.  So how safe is this new molecule? According to the material safety data sheet (MSDS), a resource that informs chemical workers on how to properly handle and dispose of chemical substances properly, this compound should not come into contact with skin, because it cause major skin irritation. So if you have been suffering from an unexplained skin issue around your mouth, you may now know the culprit…fluoride.

Does this all mean that you should stop brushing your teeth and develop a case of the Jeromey Rome yuck mouth? Absolutely not!

Here are 3 natural alternatives to fluorinated toothpaste:

  • Fluoride free toothpaste: some examples- Peelu (my fav), Tom’s of Maine (now owned by Colgate), Nature’s Gate, all available at health food stores, Wholefood, TraderJoe’s or online
  • Coconut oil (also used for oil pulling)
  • You could make your own “Homemade Herbal Tooth Powder”. No artificial chemicals, naturally eases oral inflammation, pain and infection, whitens teeth and freshens breath. The version I make at home literally makes my teeth squeak.

I also rub Lugol’s Iodine solution on my forearm, as soon as I get out of the shower, before I put on any body oil.  This helps crowd out Flouride that may have been absorbed, because I need to protect my fertility and hormonal health, and the health of my future children.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic and any welcome any tips you can share, to help our “Legacies of Health” community, thrive in this chemical warfare…
